Bioinformatics education activities at Faculty of Biotechnology, AJCU

Introduction to Bioinformatics course is offered at 5th semester for undergraduate students in the Biology Study Program, Faculty of Biotechnology. The course syllabus includes biological databases (nucleotide and amino acid sequences); alignment techniques to determine similarity degree; database searching and phylogenetic tree building; methods in phylogenetic tree building; genomics and proteomics; application and future of bioinformatics. The course has 5 credits, consists of two hour lectures and three hour computer laboratory activities per week for the whole semester.

In April 2008, the Biology Study Program submitted a preliminary proposal for the Competitive Grant Program in Information and Communication Technology from The General Directorate of Higher Education, Department of National Education of Indonesia, in category K-1: "INHERENT Activity and Content Development". AJCU proposed to develop a distance-learning course in bioinformatics as a content of INHERENT, the Indonesian inter-university computer network. In developing the learning content, AJCU will have the Korean Bioinformation Center (KOBIC) as its subject matter expert in bioinformatics. If the proposal is granted, AJCU will be the first university in Indonesia to develop an open e-learning course in bioinformatics.
